24 October - FARE contributes to an opinion paper on the N2O emissions

The return of crop residues to the soil after harvesting, such as cereal straw or the destruction of plant cover crops, maintains the soil's stock of organic matter and recycles nitrogen for subsequent crops. However, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are associated with the decomposition of residues, during the nitrification and denitrification processes by soil micro-organisms.

04 October 2023 - Creation and exploration of a pretreated poplar wood dataset

Pretreatment of biomass is necessary to improve its enzymatic accessibility and its recovery as a source of carbon. Among the existing pretreatments, dilute acid pretreatment has great potential, but it still needs to be optimised to improve its chemical and economic performance. To this end, the comprehensive dataset presented here and the models derived from it provide an overview of the chemical evolution of wood as a function of pre-treatment conditions.

To understand the virulence differences and their link with the genomic variations, we compared the abundance of effector genes in 41 Botryosphaeriaceae strains representing 17 species with their pathogenicity. We also discussed the potential use of Botryosphaeriaceae fungi in biotechnological applications.

07 July 2022 - Special issue edited in Frontiers in Plants dedicated to biomass recalcitrance

Plant cell walls are complex structures fulfilling a variety of functions throughout a plant's life. They maintain the plant's structural integrity by resisting hydrostatic pressure, and at the same time, provide flexibility to support cell growth and division and a pathological and environmental barrier that defends against stress. Cell walls are therefore recalcitrant towards deconstruction by chemicals, enzymes, and/or microbes, which is a major obstacle for many approaches to processing plant material. An enhanced understanding of the complex interplay of the different cell wall compounds and their contributions to the recalcitrance will lead to more sophisticated strategies to utilize plant biomass in its conversion into materials, chemicals, and fuels.
